Organic September Day 2: What is Organic?

September is Organic September, meaning there will be lots of promotions and offers all throughout the month to encourage people to buy Organic. But what exactly is “Organic” and what does it mean?

  1. 1.
relating to or derived from living matter.
    “organic soils”
    synonyms: living, live, animate, biological, natural;

    “organic matter”

  2. 2.
(of food or farming methods) produced or involving production without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial chemicals.
    “organic farming”
    synonyms: pesticide-free, additive-free, chemical-free, non-chemical, natural

    “organic vegetables”

  1. 1.
a food produced by organic farming.
  2. 2.
    an organic chemical compound.

Organic Food is food that has been produced using environmentally and animal friendly farming methods on organic farms.

Organic Farming recognises that there is a direct connection between our health and how the food we eat is produced. Recent studies have shown that organic food does actually contain more anti-oxidants and is much better for our health. Artificial fertilisers are banned from organic farms and the farmers develop fertile soil by rotating crops and using compost, manure and clover. Not only is the food organic on the farms but the animals enjoy better welfare, are truly free-range and have lots of rooms to roam free!

Not only does organic apply in our food, but also in our clothes and beauty products. Organic textiles are based on materials grown on organic farms and they are manufactured without the use of harmful chemicals, making it better for local wildlife, animals and people.

Organic beauty products (which I’ll be talking about much more during Organic Beauty Week 8th – 14th September) require the maximum amount of organic ingredients, minimum synthetic ingredients, minimum processing of ingredients and clear labelling so that customers can make an informed choice.

Going organic means that you are 100% sure what is in your products, food and clothes as well as making a better choice for the environment and animals.

I hope you enjoy my posts throughout September…remember…if you simply change just one product or food item that you buy, it does make a difference! Did you know that if 20 families switched to organic milk, one more cow would be free to range organic clover pastures?
