Zk’in Brightening & Hydrating Masque | Beauty Review

Last year I met the lovely owner of Zk’in, Grace, at the Whole Foods Organic Beauty Week Event in September and it was such a pleasure to meet her. Zk’in is an Australian brand, created by Grace herself after she suffered ill health when she was pregnant.

The Brightening & Hydrating Masque claims to brighten your complexion and smooth & firm skin. It is aimed at sensitive/normal/dry skins and although I have issues with blackheads & spots, I would say my skin is combination and I could sometimes do with a bit of hydration and brightening up of my skin!

Instructions say to apply the masque 1-2 times weekly in the morning or night following exfoliation. The scent is absolutely incredible. If you’re a chocoholic, or you love the scent of coffee, you’ll love this – it’s like a mixture of the two, like you’re stepping into a Starbucks! The chocolate scent and colour is thanks to the organic cocoa which offers antioxidants and smooths the skin. It also claims to improve circulation to temporarily brighten your complexion while the organic Aloe Vera in the masque increases hydration. One of the key ingredients is organic Fucoidan which is extracted from Brown Seaweed found in Tasmanian waters. It impedes skin breakdown while preserving natural collagen to enhance overall skin appearance, smooth wrinkles and improve elasticity.

It it a very fast-drying mask so I leave it on for up to 10 minutes – nothing more otherwise your skin will be quite red which is what I experienced the first time using it. After using the mask, I do notice my skin looks refreshed and brighter but I wouldn’t say that I absolutely loved this mask or that it was a definite re-purchase as my favourite masks to use are for de-clogging rather than hydration or brightening. I have read some other rave reviews though and I thought this would work better on mature/normal skins than my skin type so I asked my Mum to try out the mask too…and she loves it! She kept stroking her face after using it because her skin was so soft! She’s now a convert and uses it on a weekly basis…

Zk’in is available in the UK from Love Lula so you needn’t worry about customs or delivery charges from Australia!

*Quick note: Parfum on the ingredients list is listed as a Natural Preservative which isn’t something I’ve ever come across before but you needn’t worry. I contacted Tracey from Vert PR who contacted Grace and this is what the “parfum” ingredient is…

“While parfum can be used to describe synthetic fragrances, in this instance it is a completely natural blend of vegetal derived fragrances obtained by fractional steam distillation. We have had to list “parfum” on our ingredient panels because it is the correct INCI name (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) for one of the natural preservatives we use called Naticide. There is no alternative way to list this ingredient and still comply with labelling laws.

Naticide is manufactured in Italy and is essentially a blend of fragrance components which have been extracted from plant materials. This ingredient is free from the 26 allergens listed in the EU for cosmetic products.

The natural anti-microbial properties found in the plants is heightened once they are isolated and provide the products with broad spectrum anti-microbial activity which is why we include the notation (natural preservative) to give an indication to the consumer of its purpose in the product.

The exact components and their proportions are proprietary but their technical data has been submitted to our certifying body Australian Certified Organic (ACO) who have declared it natural and safe for use in an organic cosmetic/skincare product. In 2012, it was reviewed again, the technical data was scrutinised and the material ruled compliant. In 2013 the material was reviewed by COSMOS and approved for use in an organic cosmetic/skincare product.”

  4. Spots are my constant concern, they come and go, but for me it feels like an eternity when they don't vanish immediately… Obviously, no miracles here, but I'd love to try a brightening mask like this! I've recently discovered Herbivore Botanicals Blue Clay mask, also targeting spot treatment, and it's simply divine! Blogged about it recently.
