Organic September Day 10: People Tree S/S ’16 Event with Zandra Rhodes

Over the last year or so, I have been working with People Tree on promoting organic clothing and Fairtrade, ethical fashion. I had the wonderful opportunity yesterday to attend an event they were holding to promote the new S/S ’16 collection which is a collaboration with Zandra Rhodes, at Zandra’s actual penthouse! The whole place was absolutely incredible, so bright and fun filled with pieces of art and other amazing decor which I’ll share photos of below after talking a little bit about the event…

“Girl Power: Roses, Lipsticks and Bows” is the newest collection which will be available next year. Zandra, along with the owner of People Tree, Safia Minney and journalist (and author of To Die For: Is Fashion Wearing Out the World?) Lucy Siegle, were all there to talk about their journey together when they travelled to Bangladesh and why slow fashion is so important to them. It was so interesting to hear about the relationships that Safia & James have with their producers and farmers, who they pay 30% more than other brands. The collaboration brings to life prints inspired by Zandra’s surroundings in the 60’s and 80’s. The lipstick print was originally created back in the 60’s and was inspired by a Guy Bourdin ad in French Vogue…now all these years later (after Safia discovered it in one of Zandra’s drawings!), it has come to life in these beautiful garments.

Whilst Zandra, Safia & Lucy were all talking and showing off the collection, I felt a bit light headed and had to take a seat at the back (no time to have dinner on the journey…oops!) so I didn’t get any photos of them holding the clothes or talking but here are a few sneak peeks at the PTxZR collection…

How gorgeous are these prints?! My favourite is the bow design and I’ll definitely be purchasing one of the dresses as soon as they’re available. The lipstick design is going to be hugely popular too, and Zandra has also designed some other garments with block printed flowers on which are very pretty too.

We also heard from Dan from New Internationalist who are publishing Safia’s second book, Slow Fashion, in January 2016. They wanted to update the current book, Naked Fashion, but decided there was too much that had changed, so they needed to create entirely new book which I am very excited to read.

Zandra’s penthouse was such an incredible place to visit and I am so excited that I’ve been inside! Every wall was filled with art, prints and paintings which were all so bright and colourful. She had amazing “Z” sculptures and tables everywhere and a balcony with a view of the Shard!

Upon leaving we were kindly gifted with a goody bag (organic cotton, of course!) that had some amazing gifts in. I received a beautiful black and white handmade sequin clutch, a pair of earrings and a beautiful handcrafted notepad. We also received brochures for this A/W season, next season and a copy of The True Cost DVD, which I am looking forward to watching as I’ve heard amazing things about it.

Thank you so much to the lovely girls at People Tree for inviting me to the event and to Safia & James, as well as Zandra for hosting in her amazing Penthouse!

Don’t forget you can get 10% off A/W items using code ABT10” on the People Tree website.
